Ayurveda

The whole universe is made of five elements of air, water, fire, earth, and sky. These elements are intermixed to form 3 distinct characteristics called Vata, pitta, and kapha. Each person has unique Prakriti that is the influence of these 3 features in different proportions for Tridosha balance in Ayurveda.

Ayurvedic philosophy is mainly based on the concept of Tridosha that is the system of these three features vata, pitta, and kapha. This concept has developed right from the times of Atharva Veda, and Charak Samhita. They prescribed treatment based on the body nature of the patient.

1) Vata nature:

People with vata nature are thin and highly imaginative people. They commonly have mood swings and digestion problems. Dry skin, constipation, insomnia, arthritis are more common problems for them.

2) Pitta nature:

People are medium built with light brown hair. They are more intelligent and outspoken people. They have the high appetite. Skin inflammations, ulcers, premature baldness are the most common problems for them.

3) Kapha nature:

Kapha people have strongly built body. They are more relaxed, forgiving and happy go people. They require a lot of sleep and have low digestion. Cold and flu, asthma, depression and joint problems are common for them

Causes for Tridosha imbalance:

1) Food habits

As per Ayurveda, one should consume food as per their body nature. But modern diet forces us to consume more spicy food which leads to increase of vata in the body. Consumption of alcoholic beverages and non-alcoholic beverages like tea, coffee also increase vata nature in the body.

2) Lifestyle

changes led to irregular eating and sleeping. This disturbs Tridosha balance and causes different health problems

Ayurvedic treatments:

1) Dhara:

In this process, a continuous stream of medicine is poured on the head for one hour. It is to reduce stress and induce sleep. They use different liquid medicines like Navara, coconut oil for different diseases

2) Navarakizhi:

Navara rice is cooked in cow milk and that mixture is applied all over the body using linen cloth. This massage nourishes the body and especially useful during muscle disorders

3) Pizhichil:

Medicated oils are poured on the patient’s body from a certain height and give massage all over the body. This helps in reducing vata disorders like arthritis, back pain, paralysis.

4) Nasyam:

Medicated oil is poured into the patient’s nose to treat many nerve-related disorders and respiratory disorders. Along with this other panchakarma treatment like kashayavasthy, raktamaoksham, virechanam, and snehavasthy are done to balance Tridosha imbalance in the body.

5) Food habits should be controlled based on the nature of body like vatas should consume salt, sour and sweet food, pitta people should eat bitter, oily foods and kaphas are encouraged to eat light easily digestible vegetables and occasionally meat.
